Colour Codes new photographs

...............................................................................................................................................

I have taken some more images of the piece during the day in different lighting conditions. What is interesting is that every time I photograph it looks different even though it is made of artificial light. The more I photograph it the more I begin to understand how it visually works.

The phrase that accompanies  this one is Different. It was designed by an adult who took part in a workshop run by  Bridlington and Driffield Mencap. The design references memories of flying kites on the beach. This collection of images were taken in the fog

...............................................................................................................................................

The phrase for this one  is The Right Path. is a detail of a picture made my a young person who attended a workshop run by the Driffield and Bridlington Mencap. It represents a path or pavement drawn from above

...............................................................................................................................................

The phrase that goes with this design is Any Weather, it was designed by members of the crew of the Bridlington RNLI life boat it represents the in shore inflatable life boat.

Colour Code Details at Night

The phrase for the first flag you encounter as you walk from Bridlington Spa is 'Fun', it along with 'Different' mark the entrance to the ramp.

At night the leds which are in fact behind a layer of clear polycarbonate appear to protrude like clear sweets giving another layer of interpretation

................................................................................................................................................

At night the ends of the flags disappear against the dark sky and the flags appear to hover in the sky

'Veterans Honour' was designed by staff from Anderson House a British Legion rest home which is on sea front.

Colour Code, Hot Shot

Hot shot is the phrase that goes with the Flag that was designed by the Bridlington Alexandra Bowling Club. The wood jack and green are the main elements of this design. It is located opposite the Bowling Green and  marks the beginning of the ramp on the Princess Mary Promenade. It is visible from some distance even during daylight.

The image becomes more pixelated  the nearer you get to it but it does not lose its design

Some of the first images of Colour Codes

This one is taken during the day looking north. The colours are looking bright even though it is during the day. The text of the image gives them a sense of having been drawn

...............................................................................................................................................

These two mark the entrance to the ramp, the top of which makes a great pattern and line in the landscape I have got to get a picture of the ramp lit at night with the LED flags.

...............................................................................................................................................

This was taken from the harbour wall hard to read the designs at that distance

but the 5 flags in front of the British Legion Hotel Anderson House  mark the entrance to the steps and the viewing balcony well

Andrew lent me me his recent purchase The Dumpy Book of Ships circular 1960.

I was very pleased to find pages on the Beaufort Wind Scale and the International Code of Signals which I particularly liked in black and white. The Beaufort Wind Scale is relevant to this project because I have used it as a reference for the control of the flags.  The flags will come on for every 20 minutes beginning at 12.00 noon and ending at 12.00 midnight. The length  of time that they come on for is dependant on the wind speed at the time, so there is a relationship with real flags and their visibility linked to the wind. The piece has 6 settings beginning at 0 Knots and increasing to 25 knots where it stay on for 9 minutes.

The Flags have been installed

During the last couple of weeks all eight flags have been installed.  While they were being installed they was a lot of good feed back from the passers by. When they were first switched on during the day, some of the walkers on the beach, who I met a year ago, came up to say hello , and to tell me that they could see them on the beach.

There has been some on site testing, while a few small problems are sort out, but nothing which can't be solved. We are waiting for some of the tops to the columns to be fitted.

Over all I am please with the way the works looks on site and the positive response we have had from the public, who have been rightly very inquisitive about they street.

The first section of the pair is fixed in place

...............................................................................................................................................

The installation crew give them the last finishing touches

...............................................................................................................................................

The form of the flag looks very elegant and at the same time functional. They are look very purposeful.

...............................................................................................................................................

This is the view from the ramp which makes the forms seem even higher above the viewer  and perhaps there is a sense that they are flying.

................................................................................................................................................

I am enjoying the shadow from the wall of the ramps. I am looking forward to seeing the ramp lit at night with the Colour Code flags lit up above and marking the entrance at the far end.

Colour Codes LED Flags are being assembled

Well after a lot of snow, freezing temperatures and a few technical  problems the different elements of the project are slowly coming together. The separate elements of the LED flags are being assembled in Hull. There are beginning to take shape as you can see from the photos that I took when he visited the works . It will now be installed sometime in January 2011

Close of what we will see looking up when it is mounted 5.5 meters in the air. The form is looking very slender.

Colour Codes Installation

The manufacture of the lighting units is taking longer than expected which is not unusual when creating prototypes. Also the east of Yorkshire has had some heavy snow fall over the past few days. So installation is now likely to be in the beginning of December. The artist impression below produced by Bauman Lyons Architects shows how it we all thought it would look like a year ago. I and the other participants are looking forward to seeing the reality very soon.

Colour Codes Designs

The different groups and organisations have created the 8 orginal designs based on their own ideas for code flags. I have chosen the one created by members of the RNLI crew to show you all the stages the design has gone through up to the LED matrix, which is being manufactured now.

The phase that goes with this flag is 'Any Weather'.

................................................................................................................................................

I reworked the original design and have over laid a matrix of dots to represent where all the individual LEDs will go

...............................................................................................................................................

This is the matrix which shows the position of all the different coloured LEDs which make up the design. I have also changed the orientation of the design so that it has a relationship to the sea when it is located on Marine Drive.

Colour Codes

I have been working with the design team for the Bridlington Spa environs along side the architects BaumanLyons and landscape architects  Estell Warren. The artists particular focus has been on the improvements for South Marine Drive where the modified ramp within the banks of Princess Mary Promenade will link with the promenade.

I have responded to the new promenade by proposing to create 8 LED flags mounted on columns, which will celebrate its entrances along South Marine Drive

Flags have a strong relationship with the coast and the sea. I have researched the maritime code flags traditionally used for sending messages at sea, where each flag represents a letter and phrase. He have been collaborating with particular groups, organisations and people who have a relationship with the South Marine Drive area of Bridlington to create they own code flags and phrases. These designs will then be presented using low energy LED technology.

The work will be installed by the end of November this year.
