Curatorial Project - In Certain Places

Preston

2003 -present

In Certain Places is a joint public art initiative in Preston, delivered in partnership by the University of Central Lancashire and Preston City Council, through the Harris Museum & Art Gallery.  The project actively explores the role of artists within regeneration schemes and examines how their involvement can contribute to the creation of vibrant and engaging cities.  Since 2004 In Certain Places has delivered a programme of high profile public artworks, talks, artist residencies and other events, which have engaged diverse communities and initiated debate in the city about the role of artists within Preston's regeneration. The project is run by curators Charles Quick (UCLan) and Elaine Speight (PCC), with curatorial support from Prof. Lubaina Himid (UCLan).

In Certain Places has successfully raised the level of ambition for Preston's public realm, both within the City Council and the wider community, and has generated a national profile for Preston as an aspirational city. Evidence that the programme has changed attitudes towards the role of art within Preston's redevelopment has become increasingly visible and decision-makers, such as the Council's Planning department, have adopted a holistic and ambitious approach to the inclusion of art within the city's public spaces.
