Preston Flag Market

2009

Landscape Projects invited me to work with them on their proposal for Preston's historic market square the flag market. It was the winning entry for the international competition organised by the Landscape Institute.

One of the elements I was responsible for were the 7 double sided Led Banners, which were to form a structural edge to the reformed space.

The proposal make use of cutting edge Led technology pioneered by the ADI group based in Preston, to make screens which are visible through the day and night (like advertising at premiership football matches) the LED banners are infinitely programmable, and we planned for them to portray images generated by community collaboration, from youth groups to civic societies.

It would be used to celebrate the major events in the calendar of Preston, such as the Mele, Remembrance Day, Christmas. It would be an artwork that reflected all aspects and peoples of Preston.

Finally, Preston City Council did not approve this part of the scheme, as part of the final design,

The images and the film are a record of the proposal and feasibility study from August 2008 to September 2009. The community arts project, alison, based on the Brookfield estate produced the images for the live test working with young people from the area.
