The Navigator

Navigation Bridge, Stoney, Stanton Road

Coventry 1999

The Navigator is a 14 meter long solar powered electrical object, which is fabricated from stainless steel, and located under Navigation Bridge on the Coventry Canal. The long sculpture has sensors at either end, which can be activated by passing pedestrians or narrow boats, turning on a sequential display of lights inside the tube, which in turn slowly projects changing arcs of light that follow the elliptical profile of the bridge. These lights are clearly visible during daylight hours. The sculpture is powered from a solar unit on the roadway above the canal.

The Henry Moore Institute, Leeds holds the complete archive of the project including correspondence drawing and plans.
